VISUAL RESEARCH

For my visual research I googled some modern self portraits that I liked or found interesting.

IDEA EXPLORATION

I believe I'm a person with many sides. Depending on the people I'm with or the situation I'm in, I can be conservative and quiet, logical and inquisitive, exude calmness, loud and carefree, or open and understanding. With my self portrait, I would like to express these different parts of myself either on it's own or in a combination of 2 or more. The first idea was to draw myself in a patchwork or dissociative style. The problem with this idea is that I'm not good at drawing faces, it's simply not my style but I just thought using doodles to piece together my face would be cool.

I think exuding calmness and being open and understanding come hand in hand and is something that I want to be for others. With that, calm can be many things for other people, it can be a place or a person or doing something they like. It can be the way I look at them that makes them calm and able to trust me to not judge them for the things they say, often times I find myself allowing others to open up without knowing why. So the second idea I had is to draw my eyes. Everyone has different eyes and can serve as a sort of self identity. In the reference image below it's a common art style to draw kpop groups in because you can still identify each member just by looking at their eyes. And instead of simply using pencil or colour pencils, I would use my fingerprints in ink or poster colour to represent also the physical part of my identity.

In terms of aesthetics or self expression, I like darker themes where only the silhouette is seen. This aesthetic expresses my inner demons. Especially the first picture on the left shows light in the darkness and you can barely see the top half of her head almost like expressing consuming thoughts of the mind. The other 2 pictures, silhouettes can only be created in the presence of light meaning others can see the light despite the darkness.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
- Miss Maria said it would be better to work with my third idea since I was not comfortable drawing realistic portraits. The idea itself was also interesting in her opinion so she advised me to go for it.

FINAL DESIGN OUTCOME

The idea was to show my roots or where I came from. The image on the left is a picture of the garden from inside my house looking out. I've lived in this house my whole life so it's really where I'm most familiar with, it's part of me. The picture on the right is the picture of myself that I used for the silhouette / shadow.

The picture below shows the final outcome. I edited the pictures in Photoshop and cropped out the sides where you can see the lamp and the wall. I multiplied the layers and made the curtains darker to show contrast between the foreground and background with the background being lighter. I masked the image of myself and added an dark translucent layer tint using the brush tool to make myself darker to match the foreground. I made the black translucent to make sure the contours of my arms and legs were still visible so that it didn't just look like a clump of black.

REFLECTION

Week 6
This week I spent a lot of time exploring ways to express myself through my self portrait and choosing which parts of me I wanted to show. I knew I was not comfortable with doing realism art style so I came up with a few ideas that had minimal requirement for that.

Week 7
I had the perfect opportunity to go back to my hometown and take the picture of the garden at home for this project. I think it shows my story pretty well in the physical sense, as in the location and where I'm from. I had no trouble using photoshop for this assignment and I made sure all the shadows where done neatly and made the lines as clean as possible when masking.
