EXERCISES

Exercise 1
The assets provided to us were Hearst Mansion and Shazam image as seen below.

Figure 1.1 Hearst Mansion Exercise Assets

After watching the tutorial video and reading through the slides that introduced us to the tools we need to use, I attempted the exercise. I had no problem masking Shazam using the quick selection tool as shown in the image below.

Next I moved Shazam into Hearst mansion and adjusted his size and colour match to his environment. I then made the reflection and shadow accordingly, making sure to make the reflection more faded and used Gaussian blur to make it less sharp around the edges. Below is the final product of Hearst Mansion with Shazam.

Finally, I attempted the exercise using my image instead. I repeated all the steps above using the image my friend took of me to produce the final image at the bottom.

Exercise 2

For exercise 2 we are required to use match colour and previously taught photoshop skills to merge 2 images together, a sunset, a house and a cowboy shown below.

Below is the outcome for this exercise. I did it by masking the sky in the house photo and replacing it with the sunset photo with the house in front. Then I used match colour adjustment so that the house was more yellow like the sunset. Then I carefully masked the cowboy and placed him in the sunset and house picture. I then cleaned up the masking using the brush tool and also made some extra strokes on his feet so that it looked like he was standing in the grass. I used the soft rounded brush so that it looked more natural.

Exercise 3

For exercise 3 we were required to recolour a black and white photo. I made 2 attempts at this and essentially the hardest part was getting the masking of the hair right.

Before:

After:

I submitted the one on the right as my final submission. I had a lot of trouble with the girl's hair and had to mask it a few times and clean it up with the brush tool to make sure it looked clean. I chose green for the shirt because it contrasts well with her red hair. I also like how bright her eyes look after I coloured them blue.

As for the male on the left, he was a bit easier to mask and recolour. I like the blending mode on the shirt because it brings out the textures. The process was the same and I used the brush tool a lot to clean up the masking so that the colours don't overlap and keep the lines clean.

Exercise 4

For exercise 4 we had to create a hybrid animal using a displacement map. I chose a deer and a snake skin pattern. I masked the deer for the displacement map, then placed the snake skin on the original photo. Then, using the displacement map to map the snake skin pattern onto the deer.

Below is the final outcome after some clean up around the eyes, nose and antlers, The deer now has a snake skin pattern on its body.
