Project 2B - Cyborg

PROJECT 2B
First, we were required to come up with a rationale and sketch for our idea. The final product should have meaning behind the cyborg and not just a blank slate.

Rationale:
"My idea involves a scenario and a back story. I imagined a scene where a robot was left at its docking / charging station. The story would be a neglected robot that was once loved by the family but now is just left to sleep for eternity. The position I would take the photo is sitting down in the corner of a room with a plug beside me or maybe I can photoshop wires leading into my body and mechanical legs to show that I’m a cyborg."

Sketch:

We also had to find reference images. The images I found are mostly for skin augmentations and wires.

After that I started to work on the project. First, I took pictures of myself in the pose and place I thought could tell the story well. For this, I asked a friend to help me take pictures at his apartment. We tried a few poses and took 1 without me in the picture just in case I need it. The pictures below are what I chose in the end.

I was a bit nervous to do the cyborg part but Mr Martin helped by giving us links to videos that were very helpful. Mr Martin also did a demonstration during class using the pen tool for skin augmentation and making part of the body mechanical. I mostly followed one of the videos that focused on skin augmentation since that was what I was going for.

This image below is what I showed Mr Martin on Week 11. Some of the effects I tried to put was making my skin look smooth and shiny. A lot of those were done by adding the effects to the whole image and then invert masking it to my body. It was also hard to find the mechanical part that would fit on my knee. The skin augments are done using the pen tool and adding bevel and emboss effect and then adding colour to it to make it look like it was glowing. The small shapes around the lines also have images of mechanical parts behind them and I coloured a red tint over it. I also cropped the picture a little as advised by Mr Martin.

After feedback, I made the changes to make the background darker using the invert mask method so that I only darken the background and not myself. Below is the final product of this project.

FEEDBACK

Week 10 (Showed picture taken and what I planned to edit):
- I don't think you need to make it too complicated by adding mechanical parts. A good skin augmentation should be enough.
- I also think you should crop a little bit on the bottom, left and right to bring you and the surrounding items like the table and chair into focus.

Week 11 (Showed final edit):
- I think it looks pretty good, one thing to add would be to darken your surroundings. Since your design is based on an abandoned robot, the dark background will capture more of that feeling.

REFLECTION

Overall, I learned a lot more about the tools in Photoshop through this assignment. I was definitely unsure of myself at first but with the guidance of Mr Martin I manages to make something that I was satisfied with. It took me a few hours to learn through the videos and another few hours to execute it on my own picture so it wasn't really that difficult. A lot of the time spent was just tweaking the lines and finding the right images until I was satisfied.
