REFLECTIONS
Experiences:
My experience going through this module was very relaxed and enjoyable. Even from the beginning, I did not understand much about typography, yet through Mr Vinod's guidance and teachings I have gained a much deeper appreciation and understanding of Typography. I appreciate that Mr Vinod made sure that everyone was on pace with the module, there were to be no exceptions. Even under the COVID-19 circumstances, he was understanding and always encouraging even if we were frustrating to handle at times. I've found the learning process of this module comprehensive and easy to understand concepts regarding typography. I never knew there were so many rules when it came to type formatting.
Online learning was difficult for me because it was stressful and being cooped up at home took a toll on me emotionally and mentally. I remember in week 8 when Mr Vinod asked everyone to turn on their webcams, it was honestly really refreshing to be able to see people even through a computer screen. My learning was only minimally affected by the online learning, and I managed to understand the course well. But having to look at a screen for classes and for assignments is too much. My whole day was just me sitting at the laptop to the point where I was sick of looking at the screen. Everyday was at least 11 hours of screen time and its not healthy. But alas, for the sake of my education, I must.
Observations:
My observation throughout this module is that we have to learn to walk before we can run. It is important to first understand core concepts and rules in order to apply them effectively and eventually create better designs. Even in something as subjective as design, there are certain rules and norms that exist for us to learn. It is also important to pay close attention to detail because any slight irregularity can make the whole layout and design look awkward. Even to the untrained eye, slight mistakes are always apparent and so we as designers must pay close attention to details in our work. I think the advice that Mr Vinod gives is always very insightful and always surprises me how viewers of my work might interpret its meaning. I feel through this module, I am now able to judge my work better regarding to details and positioning.
Findings:
After going through this module, I now find myself being more critical in the use of type faces and layout of text. Sometimes I see a widow and wonder if anyone would be bothered by it, as I was. In other modules I took, the lecturer liked using justified alignment and it bothered me a lot seeing the rivers and irregular spacing in between words. Now, I find myself applying these typographical concepts in other assignments and modules. This typography module has definitely made me more sensitive to details in type and its formatting and has really opened my eyes to the work that goes into creating type faces and layouts for magazines and books. I have also gained a better appreciation for typography as a whole.
