Project 2 - Sense of Place

VISUAL RESEARCH

Based on my understanding, sense of place should embody the feel and isolated environment of the place we choose. In most visual references I found were mostly of geometric rendering of a room as shown below. The image should tell a story visually to the viewer.

Of course the art style is not only restricted to this idea alone. The most important thing is that it describe the place well whether in a 2D painting or minimalistic piece.

IDEA EXPLORATION

My idea exploration was only based on what I had to work with at home since we were still under quarantine for COVID-19. First I took pictures of places I thought were interesting and told a story. Below are pictures I took of my desk and housing area.

Sketches:
I played around with the perspective of the curved road to show how it curved and continued into the upward slope seen in my 3rd reference picture above. The first sketch on the left was preferred over the one on the right. The one on the left is based on a spiral concept and the one on the right is more like a circle that connects on the 2 ends to make a moon. They're both of the same view but different perspectives.

FEEDBACK

Week 9
- Miss Maria mentioned that a lot of students chose to do scenes related to their desk and room so I should try to go with the one that shows my housing area because it's more interesting and I can definitely work with the curve of the road.

Week 10
- After looking at my sketches, she noted that the spiral concept was more interesting and understandable after seeing my reference photos. She asked me to add more houses so that there is more balance at the bottom right of the piece.

FINAL DESIGN OUTCOME

I took more photos as references for my piece.

This is the final sketch after making improvements based on the feedback I received and lined the pencil lines using a felt-tipped pen. This makes the small details stand out more.

Below is the final outcome for this project. I only had colour pencils to work with because I don't have my art supplies with me so I tried my best to make it as close to what I envisioned it to be. I'm satisfied by how it turned out.

Rationale:
The road in front and around my housing area brings back a lot of memories because I take a lot of walks with my mom and my dog. We always take the same route which takes us downhill and then come back to the house before going uphill. Both slopes lead to more houses with the same style of architecture. Since the quarantine started, I felt a lot of stress studying at home because of other responsibilities at home, poor wifi connection and little time to myself adds to the stress of studies. During the last semester, I took a lot more walks to clear my head and to get out from being cooped up in the house. I've always felt safe walking in my neighbourhood because there were always guards patrolling so I was given a lot of freedom to go on walks in the neighbourhood at night or in the early morning.

REFLECTION

I was definitely a little confused on the subject of this project but it was cleared up after seeing more examples and more explanation from Miss Maria. My housing area was a little difficult to portray when I try to isolate the key pieces like the curved road or the architecture of the buildings. I enjoyed having some freedom with the perspective to make it more interesting.
